Thinking about joining the band? Band is a fun and exciting way to learn to play an instrument and read music.

Do I need to know how to read music?

Many students ask if they need prior experience reading music or playing piano, but NO EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED!!! We teach you everything you need to know from the very beginning.

How do I enroll?

If you would like to join the 6th-grade band, please contact me at hgurule@mac.com .

When does band class meet?

All band classes meet during school hours. Occasionally, students will be required to attend an after-school rehearsal. This usually occurs immediately before a concert or contest.

When do I choose an instrument?

Students will choose their instruments during the first week of school.  I usually suggest that students make a list of three instruments they are interested in playing prior to the Instrument Placement Meetings (April 14th & 16th).  You will have a chance to sample all three instruments and perhaps a few more until we find one that suits you well.

Should I buy an instrument now?

Please do not buy or rent an instrument until you have had an opportunity to try several instruments during the first week of school. A Music Company will come out to the school some time in August to rent out instruments to those who prefer a rental plan. Unlike most companies, they do not charge interest and will accept the instrument back if you change your mind later. Our school has a few tubas, baritones and french horns that we can rent out for $60/year as well.

Most parents rent instruments from a music company the first year. If you decide to purchase an instrument rather than rent one, please wait until I have helped your student pick out an appropriate instrument. After your student has selected an instrument with the help of the band director, please follow the guidelines under "Required Materials" in the link to the left of this text.

It is a good idea to have a repair technician look at a used instrument prior to purchasing it. If you are buying a used instrument, please seek the help of your band director or a private instructor who specializes in the instrument you are purchasing.
